Nova Scotia Folk Art Festival Memories: Outsider Art & Seascapes

Nova Scotia Folk Art by Mary Lee Burhoe

“Loved this year’s Folk Art Festival.  Looking forward to the Nova Scotia Folk Art Festival of 2025!”

Nova Scotia Folk Art 2024.  The Festival was created by the Lunenburg Heritage Society.   It’s held on the first Sunday of August every year at the Lunenburg War Memorial Arena.  This year, Art Lovers from Caledonia to California came to this country art fair.

Since I first met her, Mary Lee’s been a maker of things.  She made her own wedding dress and our wedding cake.  Special occasion cakes for others.  She’s knitted and crocheted.  Latch hooked rugs.  Sewn Pet Clothing.

She especially loves painting.  “It’s so relaxing.  And invigorating.  I get lost in it.”

Mary Lee’s Folk Art tells the stories of our local community.  The sea and shore life of the fishing villages, old homes, ships and seagulls.  It’s as much her memories as present-day places.  Hence the bright and vibrant colours.  The lively, sometimes rough, water.

Homemade crafting of remembrance and local tradition.  Grassroots.

“People started lining up at 6:30 that morning.  Early ones were from Los Angeles.  Once open, I talked to a man from New York who said he just loved being here.  It made his summer.  Nancy Regan was there with a cameraman.  Nancy had that same friendly smile we all remember.  Made my summer.”

“I got to talk to some amazing vendors there.  Their excitement and good humour were infectious.  I’m not one for talking about myself but they made me feel welcome.”

“My Quilt Washing Day (quilts hanging on an outdoors laundry line), Peggy’s Cove Remembered and Kissing Puffins (a popular image of mine) went fast!  Others followed.  If I have a favourite subject, it’s my seagulls.  The Seagull took off too.”

“When I first started, I signed my paintings Ragged Island Studio – MLB.  Brian has talked me into putting my full name on them.  I paint what I know.  There are memories on those canvases.  Little moments of real life.”

“My paintings have always been on flat canvases.  With these Festival works, I’ve begun using stretched canvas.  Resulting with paintings ready to hang on your wall, wires attached.”

Maud Lewis paintings established modern Nova Scotia folk art as a popular style.  Maud Lewis worked in a rural form that reveals individual creativity.

They tell the artists’ unique stories in bright sunshiny colours.  No two self-taught artists are alike.  Each one tells their own story, from their own perspective.
