DETROIT TRI-CON: The First Comic Con

Yes, The First Comic-Con & I Was There For The ’72 Edition.  My Favourite Convention

As I wrote in an intro to my popular post IN MY DREAM: Meaning of Dreams – Your 12 Most Common Dreams: “I’ve always had a fascination with the meaning of dreams.  Especially after a long yarn with science fiction and fantasy author/editor Lin Carter at Detroit TriCon 1972…

“Lin believed that dreams were the source of the primal motifs of mythology, folk tales and the best fantasy fiction.  He spurred me to continue along that road — Carl Jung being our mutual guide.”

And I’ve continued on with that study through all these years.

I’m not one for conventions, but that Detroit assemblage was a memorable one: My First Comic Con & My Favourite Con.

Detroit Tri-Con 1972 Report cover by Ken SteacyThe preliminary July ’72 TRI-CON REPORT for the upcoming August event had promised, among other goodies, Lin Carter’s “Days of Golden Trash and Garbage.”   Described as “Lin Carter’s semi-autobiographical talk.  A reminiscence of his misspent youth, together with that era’s comic books, movie serials, Big Little books and radio mystery shows.”

The next day, he would be interviewed in a “talk-show format.”

Due more to good fortune and Coors than audacity, I actually had a yarn with him later.  And that talk with Lin certainly had an influence…

Lin Carter was a compelling little fellow who came across as a kind of old-time Southern gentleman.  A cross between Doc Holliday and Colonel Saunders, complete with fancy walking stick.  A bit full of himself, but I liked him.

He had read and liked my first published story ORNITHANTHROPUS.  Which, having just appeared in both of the latest “Best Science Fiction Stories of the Year” anthologies, had a lot of buzz then.  His love and knowledge of imaginative literature was immense and enthralling.

I knew of Lin already as the author of THE WIZARD OF LEMURIA, which introduced his Thongor the Barbarian character.

And as the lead script-writer of the fantasy-rich Second Season of the animated Spider-Man TV series.  And as editor of Ballantine Books Fantasy Series, giving us writers such as William Morris, Lord Dunsany, Evangeline Walton, Hope Mirrlees and H P Lovecraft.  Lovecraft’s earlier work, THE DREAM-QUEST OF UNKNOWN KADATH, remains one of my fave fantasies.

Lin’s introduction to each book in the series was a wondrous journey in itself.

DETROIT TRI-CON 1972: The First Comic Con – Science Fiction, Fantasy, Comic Books

The Detroit Tri-Con 1972 was a Science Fiction/Fantasy/Comic Book Convention held at the Detroit Pick-Fort Shelby Hotel.  Founded in 1965 and focusing on comic book artists, writers and creators, the Motor-City-based “Triple Fan Fair” has been called “the First Comic Con.”  There was a special “Congratulations!  To the ever-lovin’ Detroit Tri-Con from Stan Lee” notice at the back of my ’72 official program.

Found some great people at the Comic Con.

The evening before the Tri-Con revved up, I went down to the bar to try some American beer (I’m Canadian, eh?).  Met some fellows gathered there.  They were my age, long hair.  Quiet.  Thoughtful.  You guys here for the Con?  No — they were all U. S. Army draftees.

They talked about reporting first thing next morning for hair cuts.  Then came “processing.”  Nobody mentioned Vietnam.  But I understood these guys.  They were Working Family, like me.  Putting aside plans for becoming a mechanic, carpenter, auto plant worker, working on the family farm — all for God and country.  We talked well into the night.  I hope you got back home all right, guys.

Detroit Tri-Con 1972

Next morning I met the conventioneers.  Mostly my age, long hair.  University students and grads, middle class, some smelling slightly of pot.  Got along with many of ’em.  Dudes working on a novel, which was a lot of us.  And ardent artists.  None of them mentioned Vietnam either.

Afternoon and all-night movies — enjoyed the Fantasy adventures marathon.  And the old silents “Metropolis” and “The Thief of Bagdad.”

Huckster room was a treasure trove of classic SF and new underground comix.

I was the only one who hoped to have a talk with John Jakes because he had started as a writer of Westerns.  They knew him as the creator of Brak the Barbarian.

Along with Lin Carter, guests included cartoonist Russell Myers of Broom-Hilda comic strip fame.

Bob Taylor (animator, original Spider-Man TV series; cartoonist, see below).  Ken Muse (animator, Flintstones, Yogi Bear & more).  Gray Morrow.  Al Williamson.  And Rick Yager (Buck Rogers newspaper strips).

Gray Morrow was given the 1972 Tri-Con’s Nova Award to honour his fantasy illustrations and paintings.  At the time, Morrow was known for his DC Comics work on their Westerns and titles like House of Mystery and Witching Hour.  I knew him best for his cover paintings.  Mostly Sword & Sorcery cover art of ACE and Lancer printings of Leigh Brackett, Lin Carter, Michael Moorcock (his Edward P Bradbury Mars Trilogy), the visionary Andre Norton, Clifford D Simak, Thomas Burnett Swann and Roger Zelazny.

I was aware of Al Williamson mostly as one of the group of artists, including Frank Frazetta and Roy G Krenkel, doing stunning paintings and line illustrations of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ fantastic works, including Tarzan.

I didn’t know until the Tri-Con that he had also done some of my fave comic book Westerns growing up such as Atlas Comic’s Ringo Kid and Western Outlaws as well as Dell’s Gunsmoke.  Al was given a National Cartoonist Society Best Comic Book artist award for his work on the more recent Flash Gordon series from King Features.

And…

Writers.

John Jakes.  Edmond Hamilton (who helped create the pulp fiction subgenre of Space Opera, as well as writing for DC — Superman, Batman, even originating the character Batwoman in 1956).  And the capricious, idiosyncratic, life-affirming scripter of stories for EerieCreepy and Vampirella, T Casey Brennan.

Leigh Brackett.  Who wrote of ancient Mars with poetry and dreamlike imagination.  As well as screenplays of fave movies of mine like John Wayne’s Rio Bravo (she would later work on the film script for The Empire Strikes Back).  She was also at TriCon ’72, sitting with her husband Edmond Hamilton.

Leigh was one of the essential writers in my formative years and I just wanted to go over and thank her.  I didn’t.  One of my few regrets.

I’m not one for group get-togethers, but had some fun there.  Even got to like American beer…

Special Thanks To: Tom Orzechowski, who sent patient hand-printed replies to my inquiries about the coming Tri-Con: “Shirt ‘n’ tie would be unique.  Bare feet and denims would be the norm, if past Detroit cons are any indication.”  Not barefoot, I showed up in boots, but blue denim has always been my default threads.  Tom’s notes were written in neat red-inked block letters — could be his writing on my ID Card.  I see that Tom, aka Orz, became a renowned letterer for Uncanny X-Men, Wolverine, Spawn & others.

Tom’s Tri-Con co-chairman and organizer, Michael Kucharski, has produced some amazing fantasy and commercial art.  His wildlife paintings (a genre I love) are wonderful.  See www.kucharskiart.com.

Other organizers included Arvell Jones, Martin Pasko and Tony Isabella, all going on to become top comic artists and writers.  And Jerry Bails.  Bails, who helped found the Detroit Con in ’65, is remembered as the “Father of Comic Book Fandom.”

Must have been something in the air at that Tri-Con, man…

Art Notes: Header illustration by Al Williamson, featuring Flash Gordon, Dale Arden and the world of Mongo.

“Dragon” image below header is a detail from the cover of the ACE Books first edition of Lin Carter’s THE WIZARD OF LEMURIA, painting by Gray Morrow.  I chose this image because Lin and Gray were the two Guests of Honor at Tri-Con ’72.

Front cover art of ’72 TRI-CON REPORT shown above is by a young Ken Steacy.  Looks like a scene from Edgar Rice Burroughs’ OUT OF TIME’S ABYSS.  Ken went on to to create the artwork for comic book series like Astro Boy and Jonny Quest, as well as DC, Marvel and graphic novel collaborations with authors Harlan Ellison and Dean Motter.

Ken was inducted into the Canadian Comic Book Creator Hall of Fame in 2009.  Ken’s latest work is WAR BEARS, in collaboration with Margaret Atwood and produced by Dark Horse.

Terry Austin’s choice of Batman’s cowl and cape to top his Tri-Con ’72 ID Badge illustration was prescient, since just four years later he was inking Marshall Rogers’ Batman pencils for DC’s Detective Comics.  Terry earned numerous Eagle and Inkpot Awards.  In 2003, he self-published AUSTIN ART: 60 Pages of Drawings by Terry Austin, which can’t be purchased anywhere (I searched).

The Bob Taylor “Birds of a Feather” cartoon appeared on the Welcome Page of the DETROIT TRI-CON 1972 PROGRAM.

And the Tradition continues.  Check out MOTOR CITY COMIC CON 2024!

CRUELTY UNCAGED: Born Free – Banning Silver Fox Farms & Other Fur Factories

Silver Fox farms still exist!

Born Free USA Releases Urgent New Report on European Fur Farms

Silver fox farms

“U. S. Animal Welfare and Conservation group examines 46 European countries based on how well they regulate factory-farmed fur.”  Which countries are closing down brutal factory fur farms?  Which are still allowing them to operate?  What YOU can do!

I once lived on a street called Fox Farm Road.  Those foxes were long gone.  The area was being overtaken by Suburbia: housing developments were swallowing up the woodlands and old farms.

But I still found broken-down rusty fences of barbed or chicken wire and collapsing wooden pens.  I heard the stories from guys who remembered the thriving silver fox business.  “Used to be big money in foxes.”

No wonder.  This black fox, aka “silver fox,” was considered the richest of fur bearers.

The beautiful black foxes with their long, soft luxurious coats of silver-tipped hair were once the envy of the nobility of Europe and Asia, who wanted to wear those glossy pelts.  And of modern women who want to look like aristocrats.

I never had any problem with hunting game for food.  I gave it up myself early on, but know that putting wild game on the table is still a necessity for some working families.  Killing animals for the fashion industry always infuriated me.  Wasteful.  Heartless.  Cruel.

Today, silver fox farms and other fur-bearing factories are being closed in some enlightened countries.  Which countries?

CRUELTY UNCAGED: Silver Fox Fur Farm LawsBorn Free USA, a global leader in animal welfare and wildlife conservation, has released “CRUELTY UNCAGED.” It’s a report ranking 46 European countries based on their regulation of factory-farmed fur.

“A handful of countries have achieved complete bans on fur farms and more are phasing them out.  Still, almost half of the countries in the survey were found to have little or no protective legislation for furbearing animals or for animal welfare in general.”

According to Born Free USA’s report, five nations have already banned fur farms.  The United Kingdom (Scotland, England, Wales & Northern Ireland).  As well as Austria, Croatia, Macedonia, and Slovenia. [1]

Also seven more are gradually prohibiting them.  A total of twelve truly-civilized nations.  But twenty-two other countries “offer almost no meaningful animal welfare legislation of any kind,” including fur farm laws.

“While the countries at the top of this report lead the world by completely banning fur farms, it’s shocking that so much of Europe offers so little regulation of animal welfare,” said Angela Grimes, acting CEO of Born Free USA.  “It’s important that people understand the scale of suffering that’s involved in the fur industry.  Animals are sentient creatures not to be exploited.”

The Silver Fox and other farmed animals…

Black Fox Cub, aka Silver FoxMore than 85% of the fur used in the fashion industry comes from factory-farmed foxes, mink, chinchillas, rabbits, marten, fisher, lynx and other animals.

“Millions of animals around the world are kept and killed in fur farms.  Where they live in extreme confinement and under severe chronic stress,” explained Born Free USA in a press release. [2]

“They’re often bred and maintained to maximize fur output.  There’s little or no consideration for their health or quality of life, leading to deformity and obesity.

“These realities may seem shocking, and that is no accident.  The tendency in America is the same as in Europe: to keep information on fur farming away from the public eye as long as profits are strong.  Investigations like these can provide information on the scale and scope of these enterprises where government data collection falls far short.  Born Free USA’s next goal will be to lift the shroud of secrecy over these same sorts of unregulated fur farms in the United States…”

Angela Grimes also added, “This report highlights the cruelty of the fur-farming industry in Europe, but this isn’t just a European problem.

“Demand for fur products in the U.S. supports these largely unregulated factories and others like them around the world.  Including here in the United States, where there’s no federal regulation of fur farming, and a patchwork of varying state regulations, if any.”

If you love animals, the silver fox and others, there’s good news in this CRUELTY UNCAGED report.  And hope.  And then the hard cold slap of reality.

If you listen just right, you can hear their cries for help.  It’s time!  Time to save those animals.  Time to close down those freaking fur farms.  Certainly time to leave nothing but rotting wood pens and rusting wire fences…

[2] About Born Free USA: Born Free USA, a national 501(c)(3), believes that “every individual animal matters.” Inspired by the Academy Award®-winning film Born Free, “our organization works locally, nationally, and internationally.  On all conservation frontlines, in communities, classrooms, courtrooms. Aand in the halls of Congress to end wild animal cruelty and suffering and protect threatened wildlife.”

Launched in 2002, Born Free USA was inspired by Virginia McKenna and her late husband Bill Travers, who, along with their son, Will, founded The Born Free Foundation (UK) in 1984.

Their experience in Kenya filming the classic 1966 Academy Award®-winning film Born Free inspired them.  That story of Joy and George Adamson’s fight to successfully return Elsa the lioness to a wild and free life began it all.  It certainly launched the couple’s “compassionate conservation” movement, “aimed at keeping wildlife in the wild.” This movement continues to motivate millions of followers and activists across the globe. In 2007, Born Free USA merged with the Animal Protection Institute.

Located in south Texas, Born Free USA’s Primate Sanctuary “is the largest such facility in the U.S.  And provides a permanent home for roughly 500 primates retired from research facilities or rescued from inhumane conditions at zoos and private ownership.

These primates have often endured a lifetime of abuse, neglect, and cruelty, and many come to the Sanctuary with special physical and emotional needs, requiring extensive care and services. Current species in residence include: bonnet macaque, long-tailed macaque, pig-tailed macaque, rhesus macaque, stump-tailed macaque, Japanese macaque, olive baboon, and hamadryas baboon.”

CARTOONING: How to Draw a Cartoon Character

Cartoon Character…

“When it comes to drawing, all you have to do is to follow your imagination.”

Cartoon Character

We all love cartoon characters, eh?  Whether drawn the old way — ink on paper — or with the latest computer software, the results are the same: fun folk — capricious cartoon characters.

From Bugs Bunny to Boo Boo Bear, Spongebob SquarePants to a prickly cactus, it’s all about your imagination on page or screen.

“When it comes to drawing, there are no boundaries and restrictions literally; all you have to do is to follow your imagination and let your imagination flow in the picture,” explains SketchHeroes.

You can draw a proper cartoon character if you have basic know-how about art and colors. You can use two approaches to your drawing one is known as stick and another one is ovals.

Adding on elements in the cartoon character is the basic part of the game, but this game begins when the person has done with the sketch. So, to start off you may have to imagine your cartoon or the hero and then take the pencil and draw a rough sketch on the paper.

You may draw his head, torso, body, and face in any form you want; you can draw body in different oval sizes. After this, make up a border or light outline on the cartoon, you must outline the features of the cartoon to distinguishing each part from another such as nose, lips, torso, feet, face, ears, eyes, mouth, and fingers.

When you have done with it, you should go for shading; use the pencil shading to make the impression of the cartoon, you can do it pretty well by focusing on the eyes and mouth area of the cartoon.

If you are sketching a funny cartoon, you may draw eyes of different shapes they could be rectangular, oval, square, or just like a ball whatever makes you feel comfortable.

You must also concentrate on the retina of the cartoon, on this part you may make your character look real; for instance within the eye circuit draw a small ball and give a small space in the right corner of the ball and fill the rest of ball with shade, follow the same rule while drawing second eye of the cartoon. When you do so, your cartoon eyes look more real and lively.

When you are done with outline, face features, and drawing of the elements; next thing you need to do is to add colors. You must use color very properly as it will change the outlook of your cartoon completely.

In hair area, give some streaks of brown with the black or use any good combination, in the eyes portion you can use any color but it must be very dark while in the face you will mostly be using skin color unless your are drawing an animated character. You can fill tongue with pink color, teeth with white, and lips with pink or red color (you may use black for sure if you are drawing a witch or devil).

When you’ve filled the color in the character try to smudge it with your thumbCartoon Character - Free Articles, doing so will blend all the colors and make your cartoon character look beautiful.

Comedy Writing Jobs: Writing Stand-Up Comedy – 8 Types of Humor Funny

“Comedy writing is hard…”

Comedy Writing – the 8 Types of Humor – Writing Jokes

Comedy Writing - I put a dollar in a change machine. Nothing changed.

“I learned from one of the best, George Carlin.  Carlin said, ‘I know with 98 percent accuracy that a joke is going to be funny before I step on stage.’  I said, ‘How do you know that?’  George said, ‘Because it contains all the elements a joke needs to be funny.'”  – Jerry Corley, Hollywood comedy screenwriter & Comedy Clinic teacher

“I believe there are two ways of writing novels.  One is mine, making a sort of musical comedy without music and ignoring real life altogether.  The other is going right deep down into life and not caring a damn.”  – P G Wodehouse

“Surprise is the most important element of comedy.  Basically, if there is no surprise, there is no humor.” – Gene Perret, Comedy Writer

“The best way to get good comic ideas is to work with somebody who has them.”  – Jonathan Lynn

Are You Writing Comedy?

We all have our favourite comedy writing how-to books, eh?

Three of mine are WODEHOUSE ON WODEHOUSE by P G Wodehouse, COMEDY RULES: From The Cambridge Footlights To YES PRIME MINISTER by Jonathan Lynn, and WHAT’S ON  TAPP? by Gordie Tapp of Hee Haw fame.

All three are blendings of memoirs and personal peeks into their creative processes of how they did it: how they wrote the comedy that gave them such success.

Comedy Writing

Whether crafting jokes or writing full-fledged fiction or screenplays, they all had to master the Basics of Comedy.

So what are those Basics?  Have you mastered them yet?  As you are about to read: “Writing comedy is not easy — few people are natural comedians.”

Here, from UK author Laura Dowers, is a Guest Blog Post:
“Comedy Writing – the 8 Types of Humour”

Creative writing can be a tricky thing, but even more so when a writer wants it to contain elements of humour.  Humour is one of those abstracts that does not translate well. Different nationalities find different things funny, and what may seem like wit to people from one country sounds like sarcasm to another. Moreover, humour does not only differ from country to country, but person to person too.

The written word is not a natural vehicle for humour, but there are some writers who manage to introduce laugh-out-loud moments into their work. Ironic and satirical are perhaps the easiest types of humour to weave into a book — note Jane Austen — but there are others, such as farcical, which often only work well in a visual medium.

So, just what are the eight different types of humour, of comedy?

  1. Observational. Humour that is based on personal happenings. People find this funny because they have found themselves in similar situations and therefore “relate’ to the story being told. [2]
  2. Blue. Rude and risqué, usually involving sexual situations and words.
  3. Gallows. Bleak, dark humour that often surfaces in dire situations.
  4. Dry. Also known as deadpan, this is humour delivered in a flat, impassive manner without theatrics or embellishments. The British are especially famous for this type of humour.
  5. Ironic. Humour where the opposite of what is said is true.
  6. Satirical. Humour where people or a society is mocked or their weaknesses and shortcomings are exposed.
  7. Farcical. Humour arising from unlikely coincidences and where the action is often hectic. Similar to screwball comedy.
  8. Situation. Humour that arises from a particular and static situation, hence the word “Sitcom.” [3]

Writing humour is not about telling a joke, but it does follow a similar pattern in that there should be a set up followed by a punchline. There are some elements that every writer can use to inject a bit of comedy into their work.

Comedy Writing is not easy — few people are natural comedians.

It takes a lot of hard work and a great deal of redrafting. Once you have written and edited what you think is funny, give it to someone to read. Watch them closely – see if they smile, note how far up their face the smile goes, be pleased if they give out a good guffaw. Only then will you know if you have been successful in writing comedy…

Best Selling Christian Books – Top Must Read Christian Writers

Who Are Today’s Best Selling Writers of Christian Literature & Fiction?

Christian church

Christian fiction continues to sell — really sell. And continues to grow in readership.

News headlines such as the recent “California Banning Christian Books” have just served to highlight the phenomenal increase of Christian and Spiritual Literature on local bookshelves and national online stores. And the influence that books of Faith are having on our shattered modern society.

In a deeply spiritual way, these inspirational books, like an old country Church at sunset, are a source of Light in a darkening world.

As I write this, the #1 Christian bestseller on Amazon is THE MEANING OF MARRIAGE: Facing the Complexities of Commitment with the Wisdom of God by Timothy Keller, on Kindle. The top seller in paper is MERE CHRISTIANITY by C S Lewis.

In Christian Literature & Fiction, the top best seller in paper is TO THE MOON AND BACK: A Novel by the wonderful Karen Kingsbury.

Also in the Top 20 are THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA, Boxed Set by C S Lewis, FULL DISCLOSURE by Dee Henderson, THE WEDDING BOND (A Christian Romance) by Lee Tobin McClain, THE FACE OF THE EARTH by Deborah Raney, THE GIRL IN THE GATEHOUSE by Julie Klassen and THE HIDEAWAY by Lauren K Denton.

For those of us who enjoy — and need — a good story with genuine Christian heart, here are some of my favourites.

Still in print, the 20th Century saw some literary masterworks in the true Christian spirit.  J R R Tolkiens’s Hobbits battled dark forces seemingly too powerful to overcome.  C S Lewis gave us Aslan the Lion of Narnia.  And G K Chesterton wrote about timid Father Brown with his confessor’s knowledge of human frailties and passions.

Other writers of Faith followed to entertain us into the new millennium.

JANETTE OKE.  Janette Oke (née Steeves) was born on February 18th, 1935, in the Canadian western community of Champion, Alberta. She grew up on the vast Canadian prairies, steeped in its folkways and history (including the revered history of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police). She also grew up with the independent, conservative values of the time and place, becoming a committed Evangelical Christian. She graduated from the Mountain View Bible College in Canada.

Her first novel was ONCE UPON A SUMMER. Published in 1981 by Bethany House, it was a Christian novel that blended history, romance and faith.

Her second novel was WHEN CALLS THE HEART — the first in her Canadian West Series — and a bestseller. WHEN CALLS THE HEART told the story of teacher Elizabeth Marie Thatcher who arrives from the cultured East and faces a rougher place and culture than she had expected. Her faith is tested. But she meets her Mountie. The novel was a success, and has been adapted into a popular television series.

She’s gone on to sell millions of titles and is considered the originator of modern faith-based Christian fiction. Other titles include A BRIDE FOR DONNIGAN, A QUIET STRENGTH, ANOTHER HOMECOMING and BEYOND THE GATHERING STORM. Recently, Janette returned to the Canadian West with WHERE COURAGE CALLS, WHERE TRUST LIES and WHERE HOPE PREVAILS.

Many of her books are available in boxed sets.

Janette Oke has received the 1992 ECPA President’s Award and the 1999 CBA Life Impact Award for her “significant contribution to the Christian book industry.” She has also won both the Gold Medallion Award and the Christy Award for fiction. Janette and her husband, Edward, still live in Alberta, Canada.

FRANK PERETTI.  Called “America’s hottest Christian novelist” and “a sanctified Stephen King,” Frank Peritti is a top selling Christian author, with millions of sales.

Born in the Canadian western town of Lethbridge, Alberta, in 1951, Peretti grew up in Seattle, Washington. After a stint of playing banjo in a bluegrass group and studying English, screen writing and film at UCLA, he assisted his father in pastoring an Assembly of God church and began a writing career.

Following his first sale, a fantasy novel entitled THE DOOR IN THE DRAGON’S THROAT, Perretti published THE PRESENT DARKNESS in 1986. Considered the first of the new Christian fictional revival, THE PRESENT DARKNESS has been called his masterpiece and still sells and draws new fans to his published novels. His concept of “Spiritual Warfare” continues to engage readers.

Other literary works include PIERCING THE DARKNESS, PROPHET, THE OATH, HOUSE (coauthored with Ted Dekker) and Frank Peretti’s latest, a trilogy, The Harbingers Series: INVITATION, THE ASSAULT and PROBING.

KAREN KINGSBURY.  Born in 1963, Karen Kingsbury lives with her husband, Donald, and six children in the Pacific Northwest state of Washington, close to the Canadian border.

With millions of sales, her series of Christian novels include her Firstborn Series, Redemption Series, Red Glove Series, 911 Series, Women of Faith Series, and her newest, the Sunrise Series. One of her first Faith-based books, DEADLY PRETENDER was made into a CBS Movie-of-the-Week re-titled, “Every Woman’s Dream” for broadcast.

TO THE MOON AND BACK is her latest in the Baxter Family sequence.

Called “the queen of Christian fiction” by TIME Magazine, Karen said, “Fans say that they are closer to God and each other after reading the stories the Lord has given me to write.”

Update: Karen’s newest novel is THE BAXTERS: A Sequel.  Soon to be a TV Series. [1]

TERRI BLACKSTOCK.  Terri was born in Belleville, Illinois, on Dec 7, 1951.

With over 30 titles published, Christy Award winner Terri Blackstock’s book sales are in the millions. Her Christian fiction novels include LAST LIGHT, Restoration Series #1, DAWN’S LIGHT, Restoration Series #4, the Christy-winning INTERVENTION, and DOWNFALL, Intervention Series #3. Terri’s latest title for 2018 is IF I LIVE.

Terri’s advice for aspiring authors is: “Don’t get it right, get it written. I used to spend weeks writing and rewriting the first three chapters, until I heard this bit of advice. Now I write the first draft without judgment, and rewrite extensively on the subsequent drafts. Just having the book on paper — even if it’s terrible — makes the rest of the job seem easier.”

TED DEKKER.  Ted was born in 1962 in the wilderness of Netherlands New Guinea. His parents were Canadian and American missionaries. In an interview, he said, “I grew up in one of the darkest places in the world you can imagine, in the jungle, with cannibals – we’re talking about animism, heavy spiritualism, tremendous amounts of fear. Co-workers of my parents were killed and eaten. By cannibals… ”

Now living in Austin, Texas (with his wife and two of their daughters), Ted Dekker has published over 40 novels. He writes Christian fiction in the Thriller/Suspense genre. With titles on the New York Times Best Seller lists, his novel THE BRIDE COLLECTOR was nominated for a 2011 Christy Award.

Other novels by Ted Dekker include BONEMAN’S DAUGHTERS, ADAM, and, coauthored with Tosca Lee, FORBIDDEN, Books of Mortals Series, #1. His 2018 publications are THE 49TH MYSTIC, and, in October, RISE OF THE MYSTICS.

And here’s the good news for those of us who love Christian fiction: new works are being published every day! Don’t you Love it?

God Bless!Brian Alan Burhoe

WOUNDED WARRIORS: Friendship and Live Fire Gun Range Bring Vets Together

Wounded Warriors…

Wounded Warriors Experience Veteran Peer Support at Gun Range

Wounded Warriors

Those of us who grew up with War Vets know what it’s like: our best men and women gave all for our country.  We’ve watched it continue through the years as more of our family members served — and paid the price.

In Canada, our governments have had a poor record of serving our Vets.  Especially for those soldiers who returned from the bloody battlefields of Europe in 1945, many of them having stormed the D-Day beaches, and were denied even basic help by a government determined to save money. [1]

At that time, our American brethren were treated better by their own government: their GI Bill was a big step up.

But in both countries the establishment of the Wounded Warrior Project has been a Godsend for many…

In the military, “got your six” is a phrase referencing having someone’s back. It’s mentioned in movies and television shows, but for Antoinette Wallace, it took connecting with Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) to really feel it.

“I found this hub of people who have my back,” Antoinette, a National Guard veteran, said. “I’ve found these friends – who are going to be my lifelong friends and are so understanding and have my six.”

Her words reflect those of many, many vets.

American Veterans interested in the challenge of handgun training and target practice gathered during a recent Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) class at the Stock & Barrel Gun Club, Chanhassen, Minnesota.  This stress-relieving activity offered warriors camaraderie and a chance advance their handgun shooting skills. [2]

“I haven’t been shooting since shortly after I left the military,” said Army veteran Keith Rose. “When my peer support group announced this event, we were all very enthusiastic about the opportunity.”

Peer support plays an important role in the recovery process as injured veterans rely upon one another’s learned experiences when managing day-to-day challenges. This special type of therapy reintroduces injured veterans to the unique bonds experienced during military service. Rarely duplicated in the civilian world, these relationships act as a secure bedrock that paves the road to recovery.

Warriors learned proper handgun grip, stance, and trigger control from a U.S. Army veteran with weapons training. They practiced live-scenario shooting and making judgment calls in a state-of-the-art simulated gun range that is often used for police officers training. The class also took part in a target practice shoot on the live range.

“The camaraderie among the group and the experience of the simulator and live fire range was a lot of fun for not only myself but all of the warriors at the event,” Keith said.

WWP program events like this give wounded warriors an opportunity to experience veteran peer support firsthand.

“Wounded Warrior Project has been an integral part of my transition from being a soldier to being a veteran,” Keith said. “It has provided a support network of vets who completely understand my background and can be there for me and my fellow warriors when needed.”

The Gun Range Get-together is just the latest in the WWP events aimed at uniting injured Vets and family, friends and comrades.

Swing Dance Lessons.  Injured veterans and their significant others recently shared quality time as they experienced the thrill of big-band era music and quick-time dance moves during a recent WWP event.

“This was a great opportunity for my husband and me to do something out of our normal routine,” said Air Force Reserve veteran Gloria Portillo-Leanos. “We laughed a lot. It was a fun and challenging activity with fantastic music. Definitely a skill to build on.”

Swing dance has reemerged as a popular and nostalgic form of dance that also provides opportunities for enthusiasts to get together. The fast dance steps are an excellent way to exercise and form memories in the process…

In a survey of the veterans WWP (https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/survey), four in five respondents registered with the organization for social engagements and support. In short, connecting veterans with fun opportunities gets them out of their homes, in places where WWP can help.

BACK TO VINELAND Viking Ship Draken Crosses Atlantic to America

“Viking Ship ho!”

Draken Harald Hårfagre is Coming! The World’s Largest Viking Ship Sailing in Modern Times.

Viking Ship

BACK TO VINELAND: Viking ship Draken Crosses Atlantic to America

I grew up in Atlantic Canada, with a few years spent in Yorkshire, England.  I have trodden where Vikings once went.

Yorkshire was once a Viking daneland.  Which is reflected in many old place names and the ice-blue eyes of old families, including my own.  I have walked Atlantic Canada shores where Viking dragonships may have pulled up in Vineland times.

Always had a fascination with that Norseman connection.  Their fierce love of sea adventure, warrior’s sense of honour, passionate Northern attachment to the deep forest-lands.

Farley Mowat’s WESTVIKING: The Ancient Norse in Greenland and North America was an essential book.  Hal Foster described in word and art how narrow dragonships once wandered up forest-edged rivers in the place that would one day be called Canada.

And now: “The Vikings are coming!”

Viking Ship Draken Harald Hårfagre NorwegianNorwegian Viking ship, Draken Harald Hårfagre, will soon be on the next leg of its North American tour.  It’s called Expedition America: East Coast Tour 2018.  And slated to commence in summer of 2018.” [1]

Draken Harald Hårfagre is a clinker-built Viking longship.  A modern day reconstruction of what the Norse Sagas refer to as a “Great Ship.”

As the builders explained, “Archaeological findings of Viking ships show that they were beautifully decorated. The ship’s ornamentations are inspired by patterns and figures from Viking ships found in Norway.

Draken Harald Hårfagre has a traditional dragon’s head and tail and is richly ornamented with patterns found in excavations. The dragon’s head on the historic vessel protected the ship and her crew on its open sea the voyage.  It was not mounted until departure from home port.”

“The Vikings are coming!”

In 2016, the Draken successfully crossed the North Atlantic Ocean.  Thus recreating one of the most epic, mythical explorations of all time in the wake of the Viking Explorer, Leif Ericsson.

The ship visited numerous ports and encountered thousands of people along her Trans-Atlantic journey.  The Draken Harald Hårfagre emerged as a pillar of culture, education, and enrichment.  Bringing the illustrious Viking age of exploration to life in today’s modern age.

Following the overwhelming response and great show of interest and support from the public, the next leg of the Draken Harald Hårfagre North American tour will consist of 16 stopovers across the U.S. East Coast.  The states of Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Washington D.C., and Virginia. The final tour schedule and all stopover ports are yet to be announced and will be made public in late-spring 2018.

“Final Tour”

“Each Draken stopover offers a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for visitors to relive history in a way never before experienced,” explained Captain Björn Ahlander.

“We offer guests the opportunity to not only marvel at this stunning Viking ship on guided deck tours.  But also to interact with the crew.   They will share their personal experiences of the thrill, fear, and exhilaration felt from having relived one of the world’s most mythological sea voyages.  It was the first transatlantic crossing and the Viking discovery of the New World, more than a thousand years ago.”

After initially setting sail from historic Haugesund, Norway, the “world’s largest Viking Ship sailing in modern times” traveled to the Shetland Islands.  Then on to the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Greenland, before its arrival at Newfoundland.  And subsequently the Canadian waterways St. Lawrence Seaway and the Great Lakes.  Followed by a return to the Atlantic, past Nova Scotia and down the coast to New York City. The ship then arrived in Mystic Seaport, Connecticut, where she has been docked since the conclusion of Expedition 2016.

The crew on board Draken is a team of 35 people.  Men and women from all over the world, representing a diverse mix of age, gender, nationality, and background.

The Draken is now inviting members of the public to take part in this once in a lifetime opportunity.  You can apply for professional and volunteer crew positions.

A spectacular re-creation of the Viking Age in North America.
