The Northwestern Genre thrived for fifty years.
It exploded on the literary scene with the publication of Jack London’s THE CALL OF THE WILD in 1903. And ended in 1953 with the last issue of North-West Romances, originally titled North-West Stories.
And a primary character was the Canadian Mountie! Red coated members of the North-West Mounted Police rode the wide grasslands on their majestic horses. And patrolled the Great Northlands with their half-wolf sled dogs.
There was a time — especially from the early 1920s to late 30s — when the magazine industry knew that “a Mountie cover will increase sales,” no matter what magazine was involved.
The magazine stands always had a bunch of ’em on display.
Today, it seems like members of the Canadian Mounted Police belonged to another age, a mythic, heroic age. Yet, their stories are really timeless. They live on, eh?
